Patiala District

District Patiala is prominent district of Punjab state. It shares most of its border with Haryana in south east direction. In west direction it has district Sangrur and district Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali in north direction. The Patiala district has almost plain topography with only some of the area having undulating topography. The land is generally homogenous and the flood plains of tangri, ghaggar and markanda streams intercept the region transversally. The soils are light to medium in texture. However, medium to heavy soils are also found in small pockets of Bhunerheri, Ghanaur and Rajpura blocks. In Patiala District 100% of the net cultivated area is irrigated. Out of which 97.8% area is irrigated by tubewells & wells and rest is irrigated by canals. Due to decline in water table submersible pumps are being used to uplift the groundwater. Main crops are Paddy and wheat, yield of wheat per acre is second highest in state. Main fruit crops are guava, Mango, peach, ber and pear. Area under vegetables is 8% of total cultivated area .Main vegetables are potato, tomato, chillies, capsicum, peas and onion. There are four Sub divisions (Patiala, Nabha, Samana , Rajpura ) and 8 Blocks in the Districts (Patiala, Nabha , Samana , Patran, Sanour, Bhunerheri ,Ghanaur and Rajpura).

Since the profit under rice-wheat system is marginal and need of the hour is to promote diversification in the region particularly in kharif crops. Farmers can grow sunflower, soybean and maize crops instead of rice in kharif season so that depleting groundwater and other issue related to monoculture can be checked out. Area under vegetable and fruit plants may be increased, particularly under guava, ber, sapota and bael.
